Kiln Firing Fees
| Firing Type | Per Square Inch | Full Kiln |
|---|---|---|
| Bisque Firing (Cone 06) | $0.25 | $95.00 |
| Glaze Firing (Cone 5/6) | $0.35 | $140.00 |
Minimum firing charge: $5.00 per firing order.
Before dropping off pottery for firing, please complete the Kiln Firing Request & Agreement Form. This helps ensure your pieces are compatible with my kiln and that all firing requirements are understood. I’ll contact you to confirm pricing and schedule your drop-off.
How Firing Fees Are Calculated
Firing fees are based on the amount of kiln shelf space each piece occupies, calculated by multiplying its width × depth (in inches).
- Height is not factored into pricing for pieces 12 inches tall or less.
- Pieces taller than 12 inches are priced individually.
- Large, unusually shaped, or complex pieces may require additional fees.
Example: A bowl measuring 6″ wide × 6″ deep occupies 36 square inches of kiln space.
- Bisque firing: 36 × $0.25 = $9.00
- Glaze firing: 36 × $0.35 = $12.60
- Both firings: $21.60
Additional Fees
- Kiln stilts: $1.00 per stilt
- Kiln shelf cleaning or repairs: Starting at $5.00, depending on damage
- Oversized or specialty pieces: Individually quoted
Estimated Turnaround Time: 2–4 Weeks
Kiln firings typically take 2–4 weeks from drop-off to completion. Turnaround times may vary depending on weather conditions, kiln availability, class schedules, and the volume of pottery waiting to be fired.
Humid or rainy weather can extend drying times, and all greenware must be completely dry before firing.
I appreciate your patience as I carefully schedule firings to ensure the best possible results for your pottery. I’ll contact you when your pieces are ready for pickup.
All kiln firings are by appointment. Please contact me to arrange drop-off and pickup.
Important Kiln Firing Policies
All low- and mid-fire firings are completed in a Skutt KM-822 electric kiln.
View the Skutt KM-822 Product Specification Sheet
Clay Preparation & Dryness
All greenware must be completely dry (bone dry) before being dropped off for bisque firing.
- Wet, excessively thick, or solid clay pieces will not be accepted.
- Pieces with excessive moisture, unsafe construction, or unvented enclosed spaces may be refused.
- Moisture can cause pieces to crack or explode during firing, potentially damaging your pottery, other customers’ work, or kiln equipment.
- I reserve the right to refuse any piece that may pose a risk during firing.
Clay & Glaze Compatibility
All clay and glazes must be compatible with the requested firing temperature.
- Please identify the clay body and glaze products used, including their recommended firing temperatures.
- Unknown clay bodies or unidentified glazes may be refused.
- Low-fire clay must not be submitted for Cone 5/6 firing unless specifically rated for that temperature.
- Glazes that may run excessively or damage kiln shelves may be refused.
Identification of Your Pottery
Please add a maker’s mark, initials, or signature to the bottom of each piece.
While every effort is made to keep everyone’s pottery organized, I cannot guarantee the identification or return of unmarked pieces if they become separated during the firing process.
Glazed Bottoms & Kiln Stilts
All pottery bottoms must be clean and completely free of glaze unless kiln stilt use has been approved in advance.
- Kiln stilts are available for an additional $1.00 per stilt when appropriate for the firing temperature.
- Please notify me before drop-off if your pieces require stilts.
- Stilts will not be used for unusually shaped pieces or pottery with large openings in the bottom, such as berry bowls, when safe placement cannot be ensured.
- I reserve the right to decline stilt use if there is a risk of the piece adhering to the stilt or kiln shelf.
Oversized & Specialty Pieces
- Pieces taller than 12 inches are considered sculptures and priced individually.
- Large, unusually shaped, or complex pieces may require additional fees based on size, shape, and kiln space requirements.
- Please contact me before bringing oversized pieces to confirm they can be safely accommodated.
Kiln Shelf Damage & Repairs
Customers are responsible for ensuring their pottery is properly prepared to prevent glaze runoff and damage to kiln equipment.
- Kiln shelf cleaning and minor repairs start at $5.00.
- Significant glaze damage may require additional repair charges or replacement of the affected kiln shelf.
- Customers are responsible for reasonable repair or replacement costs resulting from glaze runoff or improperly prepared work.
Firing Risks & Liability
Every effort is made to ensure careful, consistent, and successful firings. However, ceramics involves inherent risks, and results cannot be guaranteed.
Green & Ivy Pottery by Megan is not responsible for cracking, warping, glaze defects, breakage, or other damage that may occur during handling, drying, or firing, except where required by law.
By submitting pottery for firing, customers acknowledge these risks and agree to the kiln firing policies outlined above.
